A Path Through Uncertainty Article
By Las Sendas Spa and Fitness Center Mental Health Representative, Susan Christensen, Ph.D.
“Change is the only constant in life”…”With change comes the unknown, the unknown is uncertain, and uncertainty tends to bring anxiety”… “The root of suffering is resisting the certainty that no matter what the circumstances, uncertainty is all we truly have.”
These three quotes, the first from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, the second from a well-known psychologist, and the third from a Buddhist nun, summarize many of our feelings about unpredicted and unexpected life events, and especially very disruptive ones like the Coronavirus pandemic and present civil/social unrest in our society.  They also remind us that change is the basis of our lives; nothing lasts forever, good or bad!
The good news is that from philosophers, psychologists, religions, support organizations and even friends, there are remedies to help us handle tough and scary times.  The following is a small selection of ways to help us do more than cope, but to benefit from, times that call us to use and develop new strengths and skills.
Self-care – Get plenty of sleep, eat well, exercise, and do what calms you.
Stay updated with facts, not fears – Don’t over-focus on negative details or what-ifs.
Take control of things you CAN control – Focus on your immediate areas of control.
Don’t judge yourself or others for fears – Times are hard, and some have lost much.
Have some fun – Spend time with loved ones sharing activities, cooking, and hobbies.
Practice deep breathing and positive self-talk – Relax, support yourself.
Be grateful for what you have – And share commonalities with others.
Practice Mindfulness and acceptance – Try to be open to the present moment, see and accept what is before you even if difficult, and focus on living one day at a time.
Stay connected virtually with friends and absent family members!!
